Get Harry In A Car – It’s Deadline Day!
Time is running out – Harry’s car is run… the reporters are at the team gro… the deadline is at ele… oh come on, what kind of transfer deadline day is this if NONE of those are correct!?!
That aside, things have been pretty hectic this summer and it all ends at 6PM today (over here at least – just as a heads-up to anyone who’s thinking of doing a transfer to Spain today, it ain’t happening). So we might not have Redknapp doing interviews from his car window, but there’s still plenty more action to come throughout today as we keep an eye out for the movers. While it’s going on though, why don’t we look at three of the bigger stories of this summer?
Raheem Sterling: Liverpool-Man City (£49 million)
Starting off at QPR, he transferred over to Liverpool for £600,000. He then played 129 games for them, scored 23 goals and as a result improved his worth by almost 82 times. Pretty impressive then, eh? Manchester City certainly thought so, making a record-breaking transfer for an English player. The deal’s for five years so unless there’s a dramatic fallout in the future, expect Sterling’s colour to be Sky Blue for a long time to come.
It’s actually been nearly two months since this deal came to be, and in his opening match it took just 140 seconds for him to bag his first goal for City. He scored his first in the Premier League for the team in their most recent game against Watford in a 2-0 victory.
So far Manchester City has won all four of their games, scoring 10 goals and having yet to concede one – oh, and they’re already eight points clear of defending champions Chelsea. Scary stuff.
Petr Cech: Chelsea-Arsenal (£10 million)
Speaking of Chelsea, they said goodbye to one of the men critical to their four Premier League titles over the past 10 years, goalkeeper Petr Cech, after he made a move to Arsenal back at the end of June. Since then he’s already played against his former team when Arsenal beat Chelsea in the Community Shield, and looks likely to play again when Arsenal visits Stamford Bridge mid-September – will Cech spoil the day for his former team again?
David de Gea: Manchester United-Real Madrid… and then not
After intense discussions and negotiations, it appeared a deal had finally been made for de Gea to leave the red side of Manchester and return to his home country to play for Real Madrid. The deal, reportedly worth £29.3 million (and would also have seen United take on Keylor Navas) just required the paperwork to be completed – but according to the Spanish side, United filed the last document required at 11:59 PM CEST – one minute before the deadline – so by the time Real Madrid had filed it to Liga de Futbol Profesional at 12:01 AM, it was too late – the deal was off, so nothing went ahead.
Madrid have accused United of faxing this document too late, whereas the Red Devils have stated they sent everything over with time to spare and believe it’s Real who are at fault for taking so long to sort this transfer, which had been months in the making.
Whichever way it was, it means David de Gea stays at United and Keylor Navas remains at Real Madrid – the Spanish goalkeeper is understood to be “devastated” that the deal fell through and may have to wait until the Winter Transfer Window or when he becomes a free agent at the end of this season before he can now make the move.
So who else will make a move (or be denied one) before 6 PM tonight? As we go to send this, Victor Moses has been confirmed as a move to West Ham on loan from Chelsea. Keep glued to the screens – not long left to go!
