22 Years Later…
For Arsenal supporters, it felt like it might never happen.
But now, after a 22-year wait, Arsenal are finally Premier League champions once again. Mikel Arteta‘s side secured the 2025/26 title, ending the club’s longest wait between league championships since the modern era began.
The last time Arsenal lifted the Premier League trophy was in 2004. Arsène Wenger’s legendary Invincibles completed an entire league season unbeaten, creating one of the greatest achievements English football has ever seen.
A lot has happened since then.
In fact, an entire generation of Arsenal fans has grown up without seeing their club crowned champions.
When Arsenal last won the league:
- Facebook had only just launched and was still limited to university students.
- Twitter didn’t exist.
- YouTube didn’t exist.
- The iPhone was still three years away.
- Netflix was mailing DVDs rather than streaming movies.
- Cristiano Ronaldo had yet to win a Ballon d’Or.
- Lionel Messi had not yet made his La Liga debut.
- Mikel Arteta was still a player.
- Highbury was still Arsenal’s home.
Since then, Arsenal have said goodbye to Highbury, moved into the Emirates Stadium, witnessed the final years of Wenger’s reign, endured difficult transitional periods, and watched Manchester United, Chelsea, Manchester City and Liverpool all enjoy title-winning eras.
For many supporters, the wait became part of the club’s identity. The pain wasn’t simply the length of the drought – it was how close Arsenal repeatedly came to ending it.
Recent seasons brought genuine hope. Arsenal pushed Manchester City all the way, only to finish runners-up multiple times. There were moments when the title seemed within touching distance before slipping away. Critics questioned whether this team had the mentality to get over the line. The word “bottlers” became a favourite insult among rival supporters.
But Arteta kept building. The recruitment improved. The squad matured. Leaders emerged.
On 19 May 2026, the wait finally ended.
Manchester City’s draw away at Bournemouth mathematically confirmed Arsenal as Premier League champions, sparking celebrations across North London and around the world. For supporters who had endured every setback, every meme, every false dawn and every agonising second-place finish, it was a release unlike any other. Twenty-two years of frustration disappeared in an instant.
The scenes that followed were emotional. Fans packed the streets. Red smoke filled the air. Generations of supporters celebrated together, from those who remembered Highbury to those who had never seen Arsenal win a league title before.
For years, Arsenal fans were forced to look back at 2004. Now they can finally look forward.
The Invincibles will always have their place in history, but this generation has earned its own place in Arsenal folklore.
