Leicester City: Not Quite Running Away With It…

After 32 games, Leicester had a 12 point-lead over then 2nd place Southampton in the Championship. They’d made a sizable gap at the top with the expectation it wouldn’t be too much longer until we were declaring the Foxes the champions, with an immediate return to the Premier League.

Just three games later however, that 12 point-lead has been whittled down to just 3 behind early title challengers Ipswich Town as the Foxes have lost three games in-a-row – turning the Championship on its head.

All of a sudden, what seemed like the inevitable may actually be a contest yet again.

The first of those defeats wouldn’t have been of too much concern – it was against promoting-chasing Leeds United, who had already picked up a win over them earlier in the season. However, losing to both mid-table Middlesbrough and relegation-fighting QPR shouldn’t have been on the cards, and now leaves Leicester in quite the fight themselves.

Leicester do still at least find themselves 5 points clear of Leeds who are top of the playoff spots, and a full 23 clear of Norwich who sit just outside the playoffs – so with just 33 points left available it’s all but certain the Foxes will get the playoffs in the worst case scenario, but they’ll want to avoid history repeating itself.

Notably while still in the Premier League, under Brendan Rodgers’ first two seasons City spent the majority of the seasons in the top 4, possibly leading to Champions League football. Unfortunately, in BOTH seasons, the Foxes slipped out of that position with just one game to play, and couldn’t get themselves back in.

It’s a late-season worry many Leicester fans have experienced before – and would rather not have to worry about again. So can Leicester change their fortunes and get back to their winning ways, and soon?
