Women’s Football Takes the Spotlight
Amidst all the corruption scandals, boring friendly internationals and summer break, one thing is shining away in Football right now – and that’s the women of the sport.
There’s plenty to be happy about if you’re a fan of the women playing the beautiful game: for the first time ever, women’s international teams will feature in the FIFA video game series (see right, a screenshot from the upcoming FIFA 16), and of course right now the Women’s World Cup is taking place in Canada.
At this early point in the tournament we haven’t seen all teams participate, but we have seen (at this point) 40 goals scored (a quarter of those by Germany in one match alone!), England’s winning drought against the French continue and a World Cup record broken. Simply put, this is the biggest Women’s World Cup by far, and there’s plenty left to enjoy.
For example, can defending champions Japan keep their crown against a hungry, goal-scoring machine in Germany or pre-tournament favourites and 2012 Olympic Gold medalists USA? Of those who can’t take the top or second slot in their groups, who will have the best record to squeeze through as a 3rd place qualifier? And how much bigger will the crowds get – Canada has been setting records for attendance since match one!
PunkFootball features many of the countries represented in the World Cup – why not keep the faith with our t-shirts? Cheer on your favourites as the tournament continues!
