The Giants of English Football Square Off
This Saturday, England’s two most successful clubs square off in the Premier League – Manchester United and Liverpool.
Manchester United have won the title in the top tier of the English League 20 times, more than any other club – and was a record previously held by their rivals Liverpool, who have 18 league titles. Despite still being 2nd on the list, Liverpool haven’t won the title since the 1989-90 season (and thus, haven’t yet won a “Premier League” title as the top tier was named after the club’s most recent victory). Funnily enough, despite their major successes, it’s rare that both teams have been successful at the same time – in fact, only on five occasions have the two teams finished 1st and 2nd in the league – the most recent time being the 2008/9 season.
That said, the silverware could also be taken in to account: for major honours, Manchester United have 64 trophies in their cabinets – but Liverpool sneak it by one, having 65. Liverpool are also the most successful English club in Europe, with 5 Champions League Titles to United’s 3. Immediately, it becomes apparent that separating the two club from “who’s better?” becomes very difficult – and hence, why the rivalry rages on to be the best of all time.
So let the debate rage – with our range of t-shirts!
VINTAGE POSTERS
You had to stick up your posters of your idols in your bedroom when you were a kid – but the question is which idol was the true king? For Manchester United fans, it was the man that kicked the hooligan – King Eric Cantona. When not pretending to be a farmer for a TV advert, Eric is remembered for being a vital part of Manchester United’s team in the 90’s that would dominate the Premier League.
However in Merseyside, the true King is King Kenny Dalglish, player-turned-manager for Liverpool (and performing both roles for the Reds for a few years, too!) – winning their most recent league title. He returned to managing the squad a few years ago but was subsequently replaced by current manager Brendan Rodgers.
STICKERS
Speaking of reminiscing on childhood, who didn’t have a sticker collection of footballers? Even I did – being still relatively young it may have just been the 2002 World Cup that I had – but would you have collected these stickers, both from 1970?
See to the left, Manchester United’s Sir Bobby Charlton – one of the main players behind England’s success in the World Cup four years prior – a major name you’d want in your book for certain!
And to the right, Liverpool’s Ian Callaghan – the man with the most appearances for the Reds, having played a total of 640 times, and scoring 50 goals between 1960 to 1978.
There’s many other designs, too – so take a good look, and find your favourite in time for the big kick-off.
The one question left to ask then is… who’s gonna win it?
