Promotion Race: Are Northampton about to go up?
You might remember back in October, we discussed League Two’s Northampton Town and their financial battle to fight administration. Despite everything they were going through, the performance on the pitch was still doing relatively OK.
What a difference five months makes.
Not only have the Cobblers got any financial worries put well in the past, but their performances have been nothing short of dominant – they haven’t lost a league game since December 19th, having gone their last seventeen games undefeated which included a string of ten consecutive wins – a new club record.
All of this leaves them 13 points clear of Oxford United at the top of League Two (with a game in hand, to boot), and – as of writing – 16 clear of 4th place Accrington Stanley. Significantly, this leaves the Cobblers in a strong position: A win this coming weekend could mean they become the first team in England to secure promotion this season – but it also depends on other results with Accrington and Bristol Rovers (a win for either of these sides would keep Northampton’s champagne on ice for now).
Either way, what looked like a potential storm cloud earlier on has cleared – and Northampton have all but confirmed their promotion to League One (even if the worst was to happen, the lowest that the Cobblers can finish is in the play-offs, where they’d still have the opportunity to go up).
It’s almost like a fairytale story… one that could rival Leicester City‘s, perhaps?
