One Game From Glory…
The Lionesses. Is there anything they can’t do?
After bringing sporting joy to the country last year by winning their first major tournament in the Euros, England’s finest have now progressed through to their first ever Womens World Cup Final taking place this Sunday.
It’s not been an easy road through the tournament – whilst every game has resulted in a win, the only one that really came with ease was a 6-1 victory over China in the group stages. Squeaking through the other two games, a penalty shootout against Nigeria in the Round of 16, a Quarter Final where Colombia initially took the lead and a Semi Final against co-hosts Australia who equalised with a stunner of a goal has meant England have faced a lot of drama on their way to the biggest game in the Lionesses’ history.
This Sunday, they’ll face Spain who’ve looked rather formidable themselves, including a 5-1 win against Switzerland in their Round of 16 match. These teams do have recent history, however – facing off in the Quarter Finals of the Women’s Euros just last year. In that game, Spain took the lead before a late equaliser for England took the game in to Extra Time. A goal from Stanway in the 96th minute would be enough to see off Spain en route to the Euro title – and now the Lionesses will want a repeat result to lift the most important prize in all of Women’s football.
Good times never seemed so good – so keep them rolling and support England this weekend in the hopes that football’s… no. We won’t say it just yet. But you know what we mean.
