Hanging On By A Thread: Why England MUST Improve
England‘s performance at Euro 2024 has been nerve-wracking for fans. With a mix of narrow escapes and dramatic victories, the Three Lions are hanging on by a thread in this tournament.
Group Stages
As discussed in previous blogs, England’s journey so far in the tournament has been rocky at best. Despite one win and two draws, England still managed to top Group C. The performances were far from convincing, and luck played a significant role. With only a single victory, England’s resilience was tested early on.
Round Of 16
The Round of 16 match against Slovakia on Sunday proved to be no better. Ivan Schranz put Slovakia ahead after 25 minutes, leaving England fans anxious. Jude Bellingham’s spectacular bicycle kick in the 95th minute levelled the score in the dying moments of normal time, and Harry Kane’s goal in the first minute of Extra Time would ultimately secure the win. It was a close call and highlighted areas that need attention.
Identifying the Weak Links
Defense Woes
England’s defense has shown vulnerability. While they managed to keep Slovakia at bay eventually, gaps and miscommunications were evident. Stronger teams can – and will – exploit these weaknesses further if not addressed soon
Conversion of Chances
With the fewest chances in goal among the remaining teams in the competition, England’s ability to convert opportunities into goals is lacking. The unusual resistance to move forward with the ball, plus the reliance on last-minute heroics is not sustainable.
Looking At The Positive Signs
Promising Talents
Despite the challenges, England boasts promising talents like Jude Bellingham and Phil Foden. Their potential to inspire and make impactful contributions is a beacon of hope, with the former showing why he has been a key part of Real Madrid’s team.
A steady hand at recent international tournaments has also been Jordan Pickford. Despite the Slovakia goal, Pickford managed to stop a lot more opportunities from going in, which gave England the chance to (eventually) take back control of the game.
The Favourable Bracket
England find themselves on the favourable half of the tournament bracket, too – even more so now the defending champions (and team to beat the Three Lions in the Final of Euro 2020) Italy have been knocked out, with more of the “traditional” big names fighting it out on the other half.
What’s Next for England?
Quarter Final Against Switzerland
England faces Switzerland in the Quarter Finals this coming Saturday, the team that knocked out defending champions Italy. This match is crucial, and England must bring their A-game. Having eliminated the champions and also holding hosts Germany to a 1-1 draw in the group stages, Switzerland are by no means an easy task to face.
Potential Semi Final and Final
Should England progress, they’ll face either Romania, Netherlands, Austria, or Turkey in the Semi Final. Reaching the Final would pit them against either Spain, Germany, France, or Portugal, who all got through their Round of 16 matches – meaning one of them is guaranteed that final match spot, (the Quarter Finals sees Spain against Germany, and France against Portugal – the winners of those play each other in the Semi Finals).
Conclusion
England’s Euro 2024 campaign is at a critical juncture. While there have been small moments of brilliance, there are clear areas needing improvement. Strengthening defense, enhancing midfield control, and improving attack conversions are essential steps. However, as Baddiel, Skinner & The Lightning Seeds put it in the 1998 version of “Three Lions” – we still believe…
