Everton’s Point Deduction Appeal: Are They Out Of Trouble?

Earlier this week, Everton saw their 10 point deduction for a breach of the Profit & Sustainability Rules reduced down to 6, meaning the club jumped from 17th in the Premier League (with 21 points) up to 15th (with 25 points).

With that being said, does it mean the club can breathe a bit more safely now? In reality… no.

Earlier in the season you could’ve argued Everton’s performances would’ve seen them safe even if the full 10 points had stood. The club prior to the deduction were actually around mid-table, and had the full 10 points been returned to Everton they’d actually only find themselves currently in 13th, albeit 11 points clear of the relegation zone.

Right now however, they’re just 5 points clear of the drop zone, and have been racking up a lot of draws alongside the occasional loss. Whether the deduction caused a shift in mood at the club we can’t be sure, but it’s certainly clear they’re not performing at the level they were earlier in the season.

Also looming over them is yet another potential deduction (which also affects Nottingham Forest), of which the case needs to be heard before 8th April. If there’s any appeals though, this could extend to beyond the end of the season – meaning we may not know who’s relegated and playing in the Championship next season until some time after the final whistle has blown in about 2 months’ time.

Only time will tell as to what’s to come for one of the longest serving teams in the top division of English football (having been in the top division since the 1954-55 season).
