Euro 2024: One Game Down for England & Scotland

The Euro 2024 tournament has started, with England and Scotland having already played their first matches. England managed a narrow win over Serbia, while Scotland faced a tough loss against hosts Germany.

Scotland’s First Game

A Tough Start Against Germany

Scotland’s Euro 2024 campaign began with a challenging match against Germany, the tournament hosts. The Scots were up against formidable opponents in the very first game of the tournament, and it would soon show in the result.

The match ended with a 5-1 victory for Germany. It was a tough pill to swallow for Scotland, who were hoping to make a strong start. The only goal for Scotland also ended up being an own goal by Germany’s Antonio Rudiger – despite that, it was still a brief moment of joy for Scottish fans.

Scotland’s defence struggled to cope with Germany’s relentless attacks. The home team dominated possession and created numerous scoring opportunities. Ultimately, Scotland couldn’t find their rhythm and suffered a heavy defeat.

England’s First Game

A Narrow Victory Over Serbia

England’s first match in Euro 2024 was in Group C against Serbia. The game ended with a 1-0 victory for England, but the performance left much to be desired. The win secured three vital points, but fans and analysts were left questioning the team’s overall display.

The match’s only goal came from a Jude Bellingham flying header in the 13th minute. Despite the win, the narrow margin highlighted potential weaknesses in the team’s attacking prowess and overall strategy. Failing to continue the apply the pressure gave Serbia a handful of opportunities, though none came to anything meaningful.

The unconvincing performance led to mixed reactions from fans. While the victory was crucial (especially with Denmark and Slovenia drawing, meaning England are already clear at the top of the table), fans are hoping for more dominant performances in the upcoming matches.

Next Matches

Scotland vs Switzerland

Scotland’s next game is against Switzerland in Group A. This match is crucial for Scotland’s chances of advancing to the knockout stages. A win or a draw will keep their hopes alive, but a loss could make their path to qualification much more difficult.

Scotland will need at least four points from their remaining two Group A games to have a realistic chance of qualifying for the knockout stages. The game Switzerland then is even more critical to get at least a draw out of it, though a victory would at least makes things slightly easier come the final game.

England vs Denmark

England will face Denmark in their next Group C match. This game provides an opportunity for England to build on their opening victory and address the concerns raised by fans, though it won’t be easy – after all, Denmark was the team to take England to Extra Time in the Semi-Finals of the last Euros.

Securing victories in their next two games will ensure they top Group C. Convincing performances will also help quieten the doubts surrounding their opening match and build momentum for the knockout stages. The upside is at least already, just one more win guarantees the knockout stages.
