Derby’s Return To The Championship: A Club Revived

After facing what seemed like insurmountable challenges, Derby County‘s comeback to the Championship not only marks a significant milestone in its history but also reignites hope and excitement among its faithful followers.

The past few years have been a rollercoaster for Derby County. Going into administration in 2022 marked one of the darkest periods in the club’s storied history, relegating them to the third tier of English football for the first time in 36 years.

With financial backing eventually secured to solidify the club’s future prior to the 2022-23 season, expectations were that an immediate bounce back to the Championship should be a very strong possibility. Yet, Derby finished outside the playoff positions, a stark reminder of the challenges that laid ahead for them.

The 2023-24 season did not start promisingly either, with 5 losses and three draws in their first 15 games. However, as the year progressed, so did Derby County’s form. A run of 14 wins in 19 games meant that by November, they worked their way up to the playoffs, and by the season’s end, they had managed to secure the last automatic promotion spot.

Now, the club’s attention swiftly turns to the challenge of the Championship. The question now is not just how competitive Derby County can be on their return, but how they can avoid an immediate relegation too.

Having been a club that has featured in the top two divisions for nearly all of the past four decades, Derby will hope they can stabilise themselves back in the Championship and start competing yet again at a level they’re more used to.

Derby County’s return to the Championship is the culmination of the past few years of turbulent times. With a celebration of their owner David Clowes during Saturday’s game against Carlisle United, the Rams will hope the worst is now behind them.
